Shearing on the Alpaca Farm

Shearing time on the alpaca farm is always an exciting event that marks the passing of the seasons. The alpacas have done their part in growing their amazing fiber all year round and now it’s our duty to responsibly and humanely harvest that fiber.

Once sheared, that fleece will begin it’s manufacturing journey which has many steps along the way before it can become an alpaca product to be worn and cherished.

This year shearing our herd of over 100 alpacas was a little bit different from previous years due to social distancing guidelines in place in our state.

Although we had less help and volunteers this year, and we spent a good amount of time figuring out the best way to wear a mask while shearing, our core team that’s been with us year over year was able to smoothly and efficiently harvest close to 1,000 lbs of alpaca fiber!

Working with the animals everyday, and also managing the production of the fiber they produce through our U.S. manufacturing network gives us a very unique perspective.

In an age where everyone is a specialist or expert in one particular aspect of production, we consider ourselves fortunate to have a birds eye view of the entire process.

From the Alpaca growing in the field, to the shearing, spinning, knitting, finishing, and ultimately being shared and worn by our community.

We consider ourselves very fortunate to be a part of the full cycle and see it end to end with every stop in between.
